Mark Voorham

CEO SMT Shipping

“Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet” is the IMO’s World Maritime theme for 2020.  In making the announcement, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim stated, “The year 2020 (marks) the beginning of a…decisive decade not only for the shipping industry, but for life on the planet”.

I am proud to say that SMT’s commitment to environmental stewardship is in alignment with the IMO’s platform.  Our ballast water treatment installation program is progressing throughout the fleet, and we wholly support the need to protect the world’s oceanic ecosystems.  We are also in full compliance with the new sulphur regulations which took effect January 1, 2020, whereby vessels must now use marine fuels with a maximum sulphur content of 0.5%.  SMT considers fuel efficiency a top priority for the health of both our company and the planet, and we have made great progress through careful fuel consumption analysis and the use of eco-friendly construction designs.  Yet there is certainly much more we can do – from the way we work to the way we travel – to further our commitment to our global environment.  It is for this reason that SMT management appointed the company’s first Sustainability Officer at the start of this year.

It is our belief that as a responsible company and responsible citizens, we need to go beyond just the minimum regulatory requirements regarding environmental initiatives, and this is an important step in that direction. As we look towards the future, it is clear that there will be no real profitability in the shipping industry without environmental protection, and we look forward to continuing our efforts towards the betterment of our planet.
