MV Johanna C.

MV Johanna C recently transported 36 wind turbine blades from Spain to Lake Charles, LA. The vessel loaded this specialty cargo on deck while carrying more traditional cargo of bagged cement securely in the holds. “The challenge is to arrange each blade in a manner so that they fit next to each other like puzzle pieces, maximizing the use of our deck space” explains Alexander Ryan of SMT’s Operations Department. “A further complication is that when fully loaded the blades must not obstruct the line of sight from the bridge”. SMT worked closely with our technical partners and the Captain to both load and self-discharge the windmill blades. Overall, the addition of wind power equipment to SMT’s cargo portfolio enhances our fleet’s market value. As Ryan explains, “the business increases our reputation as a company ready to overcome technical and operational challenges to fulfil our clients’ needs”.
